The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to construct a road in order to connect the international stadium that is being developed at Gahunje. The stadium is being made by the Maharashtra Cricket Association.
The first phase of the stadium is being made at a cost of about Rs 300 crore. Guhunje is located off the Mumbai-Pune highway. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will only built about 800 meters of the road, as that stretch comes under the corporation limits. It has not yet decided as to who would undertake the construction of the remaining part of the 1.5 stretch. A civic authority, wishing to remain anonymous, said that the remaining portion of the road might be constructed either by the stadium authorities or by the zilla parishad.
The Gahunje village is located about 23 kilometers from the University of Pune. If it gets ready on time, Pune might be able to host the fifth edition of Indian Premier League that will be held in 2012. Hundreds of workers have been employed to complete this international stadium. It will have a seating capacity of about 55,000 people. The matches of the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) will be the dress rehearsal for the stadium.
The civic officials informed that PCMC will start constructing the 800 meter stretch of the road near Kiwale, from the underpass of the express highway and will be constructed parallel to the highway. Although the officials have proposed that the road should be about 18 meters wide, the land acquisition for the road has not been completed till now. The officials have been able to acquire only 300 meters of the land and say that the remaining acquisition will be done very soon. The expected time for the construction of the road is about six months.
The coordinator of PCMC’s engineering department said that the civic authority also plans to build a 12 meter wide road in Pimpri along the railway over bridge. It will start near the Judson school and will extend till near the Empire Estate. This road will provide good connectivity for the residents near the school and the industries in the area. It will take another six months to complete this project.
